Virtual desktops and real time changes are all technological advances that were meant to make life a bit easier. More people can work from home or work as they travel because of these developments. The downside is that when you can work anytime you want to, you sometimes end up working too much. It’s important to take a break now and then, and learn to manage your work instead of letting your work manage you.
Separate Work from Life
Even if you work at home, it’s a good idea to keep your work area separate from your living area. That’s because you may experience a draw to work each time you pass the area where you normally work. For example, if your laptop is on the dining room table, coming to dinner might make you feel like you should be working instead of eating.
Even when you use virtual desktops, using computers for a large portion of your workday can mean that your mind tends to keep focusing on work long after the computer is shut down. It’s important to give your mind a rest. Try to meditate for at least a few minutes a day. Clear your mind of everything, or try to focus on just one relaxing or empowering thought that has nothing at all to do with work.
Sometimes the harder you work, the less healthy you become. In the case of someone who spends a lot of time at a desk, getting some exercise is a great way of taking a break. Set a timer if you need to, but get up and stretch or walk around for a few minutes every couple of hours. Doing so helps keep you healthy and reduces your risk of blood clots forming.
Remember that you’re working to live, not living to work. As such, take the time to give yourself a break and appreciate the things you’ve worked so hard for.
