Putting VDI to Work for You

As a business grows, so do its computer needs, in terms of hardware, software and data storage. The typical IT department can be run ragged trying to keep up with all the computers in use. The computers may be of different brands and ages, and may use different platforms or operating systems. Sharing data can be difficult when users are working with different applications, different versions of the same applications, and so on. This is where VDI solutions can save the day.

VDI, or Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, uses software to create virtual desktops. Individual users no longer have to store their operating systems, applications and data on their laptops or desktops. Instead, it is all stored in servers maintained by IT. Users interface with the server in the same way they would use a standalone PC, with no hint of difference. VDI can also be accessed by network-connected devices remotely. These are known as thin clients.

The draw for most companies is that VDI Solutions are more dependable and secure, and offer an easier to support end-user experience. It allows IT to enforce policies regarding the use of applications and versions, and to have one central place for storing, backing up and administering data. The installation of patches or upgrades is significantly easier to accomplish.

Because it allows companies to use existing hardware in most cases, it also offers important cost savings. Virtually no new hardware is required, and most users can continue using the equipment they already have. VDI is the wave of the future.
