How to Avoid Distractions in the Workplace

Sometimes getting work done can be a challenge, with various distractions encountered throughout the workday. Limiting the number of distractions will greatly benefit your productivity, and it will help ensure you stay on top of your tasks if you try some of these useful suggestions.

  • Put away your smartphone. You are at work and do not need to see each status update, text message, and picture post your friends and family are posting. If you have to leave the phone on, at least shut of all message/status alerts.
  • Reduce background noises. Background noise can be distracting for some people. For open work environments, try using some ear plugs to cancel out the noise. If you have an office, shut your door.
  • Limit the number of times you check voice mail, email, text, and instant messages. Check messages once in the morning, a second time after lunch, and a third time before going home.
  • Prioritize your tasks and only work on one task at a time. Each day, make a “to-do” list and stick to your list. By focusing on one task at a time, instead of multitasking, you will find you get more work done. If you don’t get something done, simply move it to the next day’s list.
