What is Adaptive Business Strategy and How to Adapt in a Rapidly Changing World

What is Adaptive Business Strategy?

An adaptive business strategy enables a business to work proactively on a continual basis to achieve long-term goals and quickly adjust those goals when necessary. This is done by identifying and quickly implementing short-term strategies and actions to achieve bigger picture goals.

Why Adaptive Business Strategy is more important than ever

An adaptive business strategy works best when change in the business environment is hard to anticipate, and when opportunities to strike and seize an advantage are short-lived and few and far between. Over the last ten years, we saw rapid change on all fronts, and this year has been the most volatile of all. Change seems to be accelerating and it’s harder than ever to predict what the future holds. An adaptive business strategy can help business keep up with changing IT needs, customer demand and industry disruption, and leave room to quickly create competitive offerings for your product or service.

Ongoing, substantial changes in technologies, customer needs, competitive offerings, or industry structure may all signal the need for an adaptive approach.

A recent article by Gartner offered three tips to implementing an adaptive business strategy and streamline decision making under volatile conditions.

Define Strategy Challenges
Ask whether your strategy building approach takes too long to craft or implement. Is it slow to respond to change, or does it perhaps lack commitment?

Map Challenges to Practices you Need
For example, if you take too long to implement strategy, focus on the practice that you need to start execution as soon as possible.

Select the Appropriate Building Blocks
Gartner identifies strategy building blocks which are placed into 3 categories:

• Inputs, like real-time insights, crowdsourcing and continual scanning
• Process, or how strategy is created and formulated, like distributed decisions, strategy sprints, continual process
• Outputs, or the actual structure of the strategy, like option-based strategies, experiment-based strategies and minimum viable strategy.

These building blocks basically offer a vocabulary to sort and prioritize during your strategy building process to create the most efficient and adaptive strategy.

“An adaptive approach to long-term strategy is more fitting for a world in which business models are transforming more frequently, and often more radically,” says Ian Cox, Senior Director, Analyst, Gartner. “The faster the rate of change, the more adaptability becomes a key imperative.”

How Desktop Hosting Supports Adaptive Business Strategy

Virtual desktop hosting is a method of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) which involves running end-user desktops on Virtual Machines (VMs) that are hosted and maintained by a cloud hosting service provider. Hosted VDI provides an isolated environment for each employee and offers an identical user experience as a traditional physical desktop, allowing workers to access critical files and applications from anywhere. With virtual desktop hosting, your cloud services provider handles server maintenance and updates. Hosted VDI provides the following benefits to support adaptive business strategy.

• Optimize network resources
• Eliminate redundancies
• Easily adapt to changes and integrate new systems
• Increase efficiency
